Turning the corner…

As we approach the end of the first 8 week session, I want to invite all students to continue to read and submit to the blog, even after you have completed the ED205 course. Much of what is dicussed here is applicable to your entire academic career, so don’t forget us! Also, look for some exciting changes to the blog as we enter the second 8 week session for Spring 2007.

Wikipedia and Academics

I hope everyone has had a chance to read Tom’s brief essay on the drawbacks of using Google and Wikipedia for your academic research. To follow up on this topic, here is a recent article about faculty at Middlebury College banning students from citing Wikipedia.

Notice that the argument does not focus so much on the accuracy of Wikipedia articles, but instead focuses on the fact that college level students should not be referencing encyclopedias in their papers. Please keep in mind that encyclopedia articles, in whatever form, should be considered entry points in to the literature on your topic. In fact, most encyclopedia articles will include a list of sources. If you ever need help finding sources listed in an encyclopedia article, just contact the library!

Library handouts

Have you checked out the Regis Libraries selection of handouts covering subject areas, general research help, specific resources, and finding articles? Well if you have not already taken advantage of these great guides, take a look at the entire list!
